Exhibits, family fun festival to a costume party

By ANGELA WAMPLER | May 29, 2007

The "Stardust Rising" exhibition will be running at William King Regional Arts Center from June 2-Sept. 9 with several related events, including a costume party on opening night and fantasy festivals at the beginning and end of the show.

? Opening June 2: "Stardust Rising: the Art of Charles Vess" coincides with the release of the motion picture. The exhibition will showcase a wide array of objects, including artwork from private collections and objects/artwork used in the creation of the film. Vess says they're planning to include Gaiman's original, handwritten manuscript.

? A Family Fun Fantasy Festival will be held Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. $5 per person (reserve space by Thursday, May 31). Events will include a Book Signing with Charles Vess, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Faerie Realm Make and Take art projects, 1-4 p.m.; Faerie-Guided Tours of the "Stardust" exhibit, 1-4 p.m.; and a Faerie Reception with Green Man treats and Peter Pan punch at 3 p.m.

? An "adults only" Stardust Costume Party will take place Saturday, June 2 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. The evening will include creative culinary delights, a cash bar, live music, and a costume contest (come dressed as a magical or mythical character). Contest winners will become the Court for the King and Queen of Faeriedom during the September 8 Stardust Festival. Admission $25. 276-628-5005.

? Meet Charles Vess Sunday, June 3 (reserve space before Friday, June 1). From 2-3:30 p.m. Vess will discuss his 30-year career, from before publication to Spiderman and his latest sculptures and books.

? Favorite Film Nights will be held on Thursdays, July 12-Aug. 23. The free series features the favorites of Charles Vess — with films appropriate for children and others for adults.

? A Stardust Festival on Sept. 8 will cap off the "Stardust Rising" exhibition. The day will feature dancing, concerts, costume contests, and more.

? For Summer Arts Camps and Adult Workshops coinciding with Stardust, call 276-628-5005.
