"From These Hills" — Joshua Coleman, Thomas Schram
June 27, 2007Nature and the land are also a feature of the sculptures of Joshua Coleman [Cleveland, Tenn.] and Thomas Schram [Asheville, NC]. Coleman's life-size calf, which strains against its tether, was made by welding together parts of used farm machinery so that the machinery literally and figuratively makes this calf come to life, at least artistically. The life force in Schram's dramatic high-relief wall sculpture is very different indeed; even more uncontrollable than kudzu in late summer, it seems to be reaching out, searching (for a victim?) with the malevolence of a Venus flytrap gone amuck after an atomic experiment.
