RICHMOND, Va. — Freedom, the independent film shot and produced in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee last year, has been named one of three finalists in the 2008 Virginia Film Competition.

The competition was created by the Virginia Film Office in Richmond to highlight the talents of Virginia's homegrown film making community. The competition displays the work of Virginia film makers in three categories: Features, Shorts and Documentaries.

Freedom is a finalist in the Features category.

Finalists in all three categories will be screened for the public on Saturday, April 26 at the Byrd Theater in Richmond with winners for each category announced that day. Freedom will screen between 3 and 6:15 p.m.

The film was written and directed by Bristol native Rick McVey and features performances by several local actors including Mike Ostroski, Frank Green and Eugene Wolf. The film includes the work of over 100 local Civil War reenactors. It won several awards at the 2007 Southern Appalachian International Film Festival including Best Film, Best Direction and a Best Supporting Actor Award for co-star John Hedges. The film continues to make the rounds of film festivals in different parts of the country. It's next screening will be April 19 at the Bare Bones Film Festival in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
