JOHNSON CITY, TN Students attending East Tennessee State University now have the opportunity to earn a minor in dance.

The new 22-hour credit program was recently approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents and consists of beginning, intermediate, and advanced dance courses in areas such as ballet, contemporary dance, folk, modern, tap, jazz, ballroom, and country and western, along with classes in dance composition, dance improvisation, dance history, and musical theatre dance.

Students who have taken previous dance courses at ETSU may be able to apply those credits toward the new degree minor.

"The minor is open to everyone, from beginning enthusiasts to skilled performers, and it is great for promoting an active and healthy lifestyle," said Cara Harker, an assistant professor in the Division of Theatre and Dance within the ETSU Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences.

"The dance minor is an ideal companion for students majoring in theatre and will provide them with the tools for becoming a working actor. This is a performance-based program, and students will have the opportunity to participate in events such as the annual spring dance concert."

Harker graduated from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University with an M.F.A. in theatre performance in 2003. Since that time, she has been working in theatre and dance as an instructor, choreographer, and director in Chicago, Cincinnati, and East Tennessee. Previous credits include Around the World in 80 Days, Marat/Sade, and Girl's Eye View, which she co-wrote and performed in at Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati.

At ETSU, she directed and choreographed Quilters, choreographed Balloon, As You Like It, Suite Simone, Tango Suite and Grease and was seen onstage as Kathleen in Three the Hard Way.
