Abingdon Museum to Lay Off Staff

Relocation Still Planned

By DEBRA McCOWN | BRISTOL HERALD COURIER | October 07, 2010

ABINGDON, Va. The William King Museum is "doing some belt-tightening" in the form of layoffs, Executive Director Marcy Miller confirmed Thursday.

But, she said, the museum is moving ahead with its plans to move to a new location downtown.

"We have sustained cutbacks in government funding, foundation funding and private funding, so we are doing everything possible to remain an asset to this community," she said. "That unfortunately meant a couple of layoffs."

She would not comment on the number or type of employees being laid off, but said no programming is being cut.

She said the museum is asking $2.3 million for its current facility, an old high school on a hilltop overlooking the town.

She's hopeful the museum board will vote by the end of the year on a new site on Main Street.
