D-B Students make All-State Orchestra
In January two students from Dobyns-Bennett High School made the All-State Orchestra, putting them among some of the best high school orchestra musicians in Tennessee.
Sophomore Laura Quillin and junior Abigail Hooker made All-State on violin, the only Tri-Cities area students to do so. Quillin tried out on violin and viola, made All-State on both, but chose viola and made first chair. The two students will travel to Chattanooga in April for their All-State performance.
In related news, six students from Dobyns-Bennett, four from Sullivan Central, four from Science Hill, and three from Volunteer high schools made the All-State Band.
Science Hill Orchestra Earns National Honor
At press time, the Topper Orchestra at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn. was preparing to compete in one of the most prestigious high school orchestra competitions in the nation.
Out of more than 100 high school orchestras, only 10 were selected to participate in the American String Teachers Association's National Orchestra Festival, which was held March 21-24 in Atlanta, Ga. At press time, the Topper Orchestra planned to play selections from the Renaissance period, a classical Baroque piece, an Appalachian fiddle tune, an opera overture, and a piece from the 20th century.
The orchestra typically competes each year, but this is the first time the group has ever been invited to the ASTA competition which promotes orchestral performance with constructive evaluation by nationally recognized experts in the field.
