JONESBOROUGH, TN — The Jonesborough Open Juried Art Show 2016 consists of paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, basketry, photography, sculpture and mixed media giving the show a well-rounded exhibit of artwork. All of the artists who submitted art for this competition were local. Out of 113 submitted pieces, a total of 51 were chosen for the exhibition.

Mark Scala, chief curator of American Art from the Frist Center in Nashville, Tenn., served as the juror for the show. He provided a lecture regarding a select number of the art work and themes he observed in the show at the International Storytelling Center during the opening reception and lecture.

The show was organized by the Town of Jonesborough's McKinney Center staff. Various volunteers provided refreshments and floral arrangements including Main Street Café & Catering, Toast Wine & Spirits and Anne Marie's Florist. Music was provided by pianist and vocalist Patti Quarles.

Awards totaling $2,000 were given away to the top three artists. The awards included a Best in Show prize of $1,000 awarded to Michelle O'Patrick-Ollis for her encaustic, "Savannah," followed by second place which went to Stephen Moles for his walnut and ash, "Gothic Desk" receiving $600 in award money. Third place was given to Bill and Tina Collison for their "In the Belly of the Beast," wooden bowl, which was accompanied by $400. Certificates of Merit were given to Travis Graves, Charles Jones, Mira Gerard,MalleneShelton and Mary Nees.

The Open Juried Art Show will be on display at the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School in Jonesborough through May 7. The exhibit is open to the public free of charge, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A majority of the artwork included in the exhibition is for sale. A portion of the proceeds will support Jonesborough's Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts Scholarship Program.
