Johnson City Library receives funding for new craft area for youth

By Leslie Grace | A! Magazine for the Arts | February 28, 2018

The Arts Committee of the GFWC The Monday Club of Johnson presented Johnson City Public Library Director Robin Westphal with a check for $2,500 to help pay for a dedicated craft area in the Youth Services department of the library. Arts Committee members and Club President Cheri Bunker-Forney were on hand to present the check.

Funds were raised by the Arts Committee, as part of their Community Service Program Project, by holding a silent auction at the club’s annual Christmas Luncheon at the J.C. Country Club. Members also contributed directly to the project.

“The new craft area will provide children and youth with a place for playing and creating. These are critical parts of a child’s development and the library has wanted a craft area that would have cabinets for supplies and flooring that would withstand paint and glitter and other craft-related items for a long time,” said Director Westphal. She continued saying that “The Monday Club was very eager to help us reach our goal.”

The Monday Club has long supported the library and established the Johnson City Public Library as a mission of “The Ladies Reading Circle” in the late 1800’s. The original Monday Club ladies collected books, stoked the potbellied stove fires, gathered furniture and manned the library for a number of years, creating a safe, pleasant place for community members to gather and read/select books.

Years later the GFWC Monday Club is still supporting our library with yearly contributions and special events like the dedicated craft area in the Youth Services department.
