Library's teen summer program begins soon

JOHNSON CITY, TN — Young adults who are ages 12-18 are invited to participate in the "Build a Better World" Teen Summer Reading Program at the Johnson City Public Library. The program runs from Thursday, June 1 to Friday, July 21.

Registration for Summer Reading begins Thursday, June 1 at 6 p.m. and continues throughout the months of June and July. As part of the Summer Reading Program, teens can register and keep track of the hours they read online at www.jcpl.net. The Summer Reading Program Kick-off is Thursday, June 1 at 6 p.m.

At this program, teens learn more about online registering for the Summer Reading Program, receive SRP information, and learn about the program prizes. There will also be snacks and activities. Teens who cannot attend the kick-off may register for the Summer Reading Program online anytime between June 2 and July 19.

Throughout the summer, teens are encouraged to read as many books on their reading level as they like. They may also write reviews on the books they have read and enter them on the program site online.

Special events are scheduled for teens ages 12-18 throughout the summer. Registration is required for most of these free events:

Monday, June 5 at 6 p.m. Harry Potter Wands: Celebrate the 20th anniversary by creating your own Harry Potter wand.

Tuesday, June 13 at 6 p.m. Book Discussion Group The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak: The first 10 teens to register receive a free copy of the book to keep for attending the program.

Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m. Engineering Challenges: Teens complete fun engineering challenges with limited resources.

Tuesday, June 27 at 6 p.m. Build a Better Meal: Teens create dishes with an array of healthier food options. Creations are judged and prizes awarded.

Wednesday, July 5 at 6 p.m. Upcycled Creations: Teens will repurpose recycled materials to make new fun creations.

Tuesday, July 11 from 6 7 p.m. Book Discussion Group Jackaby by Will Ritter: The library hosts a virtual visit via Skype with author Will Ritter. The first ten teens to register receive a free copy of the book to keep for attending the program.

Tuesday, July 18 at 5:30 p.m. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Movie Screening: Teens are invited to see a special showing of the 2015 PG-13 rated film, based on Ransom Riggs' bestselling YA novel. *No registration is required for this event.

The Teen Summer Reading Finale is Friday, July 21 at 4 p.m. There will be a grand prize drawing at this event. Teens do not have to attend the events to belong to Summer Reading Program and do not have to sign up for the Summer Reading Program to attend the special events.
