BRISTOL, VA — The Bristol Public Library offers the following programs as part of its Summer Celebration. For more information on upcoming events, visit

It's time for Summer Celebration, which means it's time to kick off BPL Bingo. It's just like Bingo, but with books. The goal is to complete each challenge on the card and score BINGO. Complete five challenges in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally and win. They will also be playing Double Bingo, Four Corners and Blackout for interested patrons.

Registration began June 1, but patrons are welcome to join at any time. To join, simply visit the reference desk at the Bristol Public Library or the front desk at the Avoca Branch Library and collect a Bingo card. Prizes are offered for completed cards only. BPL Bingo concludes July 14 at close of business.

> The Casual Word: Adult Creative Writing Class, June 1 | Aug. 31, Bristol Public Library

This class does not focus on structure, form or rules, but on the freedom of writing. It is the goal of this class to open the mind to its full creative potential by allowing participants to write what they want, how they want to write it. The sessions will be student lead and will engage in topics and subjects that are of interest to the students. The atmosphere is casual and jovial. This class is designed for all those 18 and up who wish to try their hand at creative writing.

The creative writing class begins June 1 at 6 p.m. in the Jones Creativity Center, and continues to meet each Thursday throughout the summer.

> Movie Presentation: The Big Year. June 6 | 6 8 p.m., Bristol Public Library

As part of the Summer Celebration, the Bristol Public Library is offering a free movie presentation of "The Big Year." Based on the bestselling book by Mark Obmascik, "The Big Year" is an American comedy film starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson, which features a hilarious competition between three birders (portrayed by Black, Martin, and Wilson) as they try to identify the most number of bird species in a year. Each man has his own crisis to surmount as they take on the "Big Year" to identify and discover as many birds as they can in this hilarious, globe-trotting adventure.

It all starts at 6 p.m. in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting room. Popcorn and bottled water will be served to movie attendees.

BPL Book Club, June 15

The BPL is expanding its book club programs by unveiling a brand new BPL Book Club. On June 15 at 6 p.m. in the Frances Kegley Conference Room, the BPL Book Club sets off on its maiden voyage with "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

The first meeting will help set up the framework for the book club for the rest of the year. The goal is to read one new book each month, and they hope to host several other events throughout the year as a special treat for readers.

The Casual Word: Community Type-In, June 20 | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Bristol Public Library

On June 20, the Bristol Public Library welcomes back The Casual Word: A Community Type-In from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will supply typewriters, paper, and more, so just show up downstairs any time to get a taste of this all-day celebration of the creativity of the human mind.

This free to the public event is open to people from all walks of life to come in and try out both typewriters and writing in general. Tell stories, write poetry, essays, articles; anything you feel needs to be put to paper. Enjoy engaging with other individuals and "unplugging" from the digital world. All are welcome, so we hope to see you there.

Classic Movie Corner: The Birds, June 29 | 5:30 8 p.m., Bristol Public Library

On the last Thursday of each month, the library celebrates film with a special look back at classic movies. This month, they share a free presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, "The Birds (1963)." Starring Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedrin, "The Birds" starts off in an innocuous neighborhood in San Francisco. Wealthy socialite Melanie Daniels (Hendren) travels to a tiny fishing village in Northern California, a spur-of-the-moment trip to play an innocent trick on her not-quite-boyfriend Mitch Brenner (Taylor). But shortly after she arrives, Melanie finds herself caught in a bizarre and frightening disaster when local birds suddenly begin attacking people.

It starts at 5:30 on June 29 in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room. Popcorn and water will be provided for movie attendees.
