McKinney Center announces fall classes

JONESBOROUGH, TN — The McKinney Center and Jonesborough's Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts has announced their fall schedule of classes of hands-on learning opportunities for both children and adults. Registration is ongoing for all upcoming classes. All courses are led by experienced and supportive faculty.

There are a great number of non-academic benefits such as promoting self-esteem, motivation, aesthetic awareness, cultural exposure, creativity, improved emotional expression, as well as social harmony and appreciation of diversity. These are the very fibers of the fabric known as our American culture."

For children, the program offers instruction for young creatives who are ready to explore the world of art. Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media, techniques and process. For older elementary aged students, courses are taught to build their talents as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level. Classes in drama, film, music and dance are also available for this age range including Art Adventures, Creative Construction, Homeschool Art, Kids N Clay, Young Potters, After School Drama, Hip-Hop and Guitar.

McKinney Center Director Theresa Hammons says, "Fine art education is essential in brain development and in developing fine motor skills. Evidence of its effectiveness in reducing student dropout, raising student attendance, developing better team players, fostering a love for learning, improving greater student dignity, enhancing student creativity, and producing a more prepared citizen for the workplace for tomorrow can be found in various studies." Offerings for older students and adults during the coming months include a wide range of courses in pottery, painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, mosaics, writing, Hip-Hop, Guitar and various workshops.

The McKinney Center offers a new program entitled, "Kids Night Out." Once a month from August to November, kids have an evening free of parents while enjoying games, crafts and movies. Cost is $15 per child and $5 for each additional child within the same family. Themes for the evenings include space, camping and super heroes. You must preregister for these special evenings due to limited space.

This fall, the McKinney Center is offering more workshops than ever before. Returning to the schedule is the popular Glass Fusion workshops with projects including coasters, plates, glass pendants and holiday ornaments. Also, on the workshop schedule is beading, tee-shirt rugs, Batik 101, Zentangle, and watercolors.

Early registration secures a spot in class as well as a $10 discount through Aug. 1. Individual class costs vary. A Fall Open House is held at the McKinney Center Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be an opportunity for the public to see what the fall classes have to offer. Faculty will be present for questions and demonstrations. The last day to register for classes is Aug. 19. To register online, visit

The McKinney Center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p,m. Staff encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class, participate in an exhibition, come to a lecture, volunteer your time, attend a workshop, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.
