JOHNSON CITY, TN A new art exhibit is planned to raise scholarship funds for the upcoming "Escape from Rape: A Cultural Change" conference in Johnson City.

The inaugural "Breaking the Silence: A Survivor Art Show," sponsored by the East Tennessee State University Office of Professional Development, is on display at The Willow Tree Coffeehouse and Music Room, from Aug. 3-29, with the opening planned for Thursday, Aug. 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Later, it will be shown at the Tipton Gallery from Sept. 1-13. The opening night reception at Tipton on Sept. 1 will be held in conjunction with Johnson City's monthly First Friday celebration.

Admission to both receptions is a donation toward scholarship funding to assist attendees of the upcoming trauma-informed conference, "Escape from Rape: A Cultural Change," which will be held at the Millennium Center on Friday, Sept. 15.

"Breaking the Silence" features works by individuals in the community who have been affected by sexual violence and abuse, offering them a channel through which they can share their experiences and heal through the powerful vehicle of art.

"We feel so fortunate to witness part of the healing process that many victims and survivors of sexual assault go through when using art as a medium. The Survivor Art Show is an opportunity for the Office of Professional Development to offer an outlet for the creative healing energy of so many community members," said Ruth Taylor Read, program coordinator. "We are in awe of the strength and resilience that these artists have, and we encourage the community to join us in giving them a voice."

Artwork will be accepted for "Breaking the Silence" through Aug. 1. Individuals who would like to submit works may find additional information at

The "Escape from Rape" conference, now in its second year, is designed to train and educate participants in the prevention of and response to sexual assault and in advocacy and treatment for victims. It is intended as an initial effort to eliminate misconceptions and create an environment in which victims/survivors will be better cared for.

Conference registration is $85 for the public and $55 for students. For registration or more information on the conference, visit and click "Academic Conferences."
