JOHNSON CITY Dr. Yi-Yang Chen, East Tennessee State University's newest piano faculty member, debuts at Carnegie Hall in New York City Oct. 18, and gives a preview performance of his concert at ETSU Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Brown Hall auditorium.

Chen's Carnegie Hall debut comes on the heels of what he calls a "harvest year," in which he not only joined the ETSU Department of Music faculty as an assistant professor of piano and theory, but he also captured three first prizes: the Washington (D.C.) International Competition; Waring International Piano Competition in Palm Desert, California; and Five Towns Music Competition in New York. In addition, he spent three weeks in Europe playing concerts and conducting research as a 2017 Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation grant recipient.

"Carnegie Hall is truly a special place a dream place for all musicians," Chen says. "This is one of the performance opportunities sponsored by the Michael Masser Family Foundation and the Waring International Piano Competition. It is probably the most exciting event in my life. I am humbled and thankful for another moment to make music."

Chen presents a full-length solo recital at Carnegie Hall featuring works by Beethoven, Debussy, De Falla and Rachmaninoff, as well as his own original compositions.

His preview performance of these pieces is free and open to the public.
