The Summer Reading Program kicked off May 27 at the Washington County Public Library System. The program ends July 7.

Each Tuesday throughout the Summer Reading Program events are at Mendota at 11 a.m. and Hayters Gap at 2 p.m. Wednesday programs are in Damascus at 11 a.m. and Glade Spring at 2 p.m. The program moves to the main library in Abingdon Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Joelle Shenk, storyteller, spins yarns June 5-7. Magician Chris Michael dazzles with his interactive magic June 12-14. Bright Star Theatre brings its live performance of “Alice in Wonderland” to the program June 19-21. Other programs include Darin Handy’s animals and Bingo.

Lego Play Day is held each Monday during the program at the main library at 11 a.m. A STEM program is held at 2 p.m. The STEM programs are appropriate for the second grade and up.

A family-friendly movie is shown at the main library each Thursday at 6 p.m. The Glade Spring branch library shows movies just for teens Fridays at 2 p.m.

Children from birth to fifth grade read and complete book logs (a book log is a list of five titles the child reads or listens to). They then exchange book logs for prizes from the treasure chest and are entered to win in a weekly bike giveaway.

Special teen programs are held Mondays at 6 p.m., at the main library and Thursdays at 2 p.m., in Glade Spring. The programs include stress balls, flameless candle holders, butterfly fairy jars and upcycled shirt bag.

Also for teens only are weekly drop-in programs and gift card giveaways. To participate in teen activities you must be in the sixth through 12th grade. Homeschooled children must be at least 11 years old to attend.

The Summer Reading Program encourages children and teens to continue reading during the summer. A variety of incentives are available, including a bike give-away sponsored by Moose Lodge 1966 and special giveaways for teens featuring movie passes and iTunes gift cards. The Friends of the Library provided free tote bags and prizes.

The Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library System and a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon. All events are free.
