Calling all artists: Register for the Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival

Date(s):  July 13 - 14, 2018
Location:  Blowing Rock,

BLOWING ROCK, NC — The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum seeks professional and amateur painters to participate in the area’s first Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival (outdoor painting festival), the concluding event for BRAHM’s 2018 Community Week. Painting “en plein air” is the act of painting on site, in the out-of-doors. The festival invites painters of all levels to come experience the High Country’s breathtaking views, set up their easels and paint “en plein air” Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. Artists must register for the event and are encouraged to register in advance.

Organizer and Blowing Rock resident Cara Hayes comments on the beauty of plein air work, "With paintings done out of doors, the artist has to paint quickly and spontaneously, working to capture the effects of light. There is a balance of art against nature with its distractions of rain, wind, insects and changing light."

The two-day festival includes a registered artists’ reception Friday, July 13 at 6 p.m. at BRAHM and a public exhibition and “Wet Paint Show & Sale” Saturday, July 14 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the museum. The “Wet Paint Show & Sale” celebrates work completed during the festival with Artists’ and People’s Choice Awards with prizes totaling more than $1,000. Featured plein air artists Kim Abernethy, Kevin Beck, Joe Miller, Dwight Rose and Jeremy Sams invite you to watch them paint at select locations in Blowing Rock.
