JOHNSON CITY — The first talk in this academic year’s Leading Voices in Public Health Lecture series hosted by East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health takes place Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Millennium Centre in Johnson City.

Beth Macy, author of national bestsellers “Factory Man” and “Truevine,” presents “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America,” which is also the title of her latest book.

As both an author and a journalist, Macy is one of the foremost chroniclers of the American experience. Her book, “Factory Man,” focuses on globalization and its effects on the American worker while “Truevine” examines the nation’s Jim Crow history and racism through the story of two kidnapped brothers.

In “Dopesick,” now a bestseller in its own right, Macy turns her attention to the national crisis that is the opioid epidemic. In the book, Macy profiles the real people touched by this epidemic and those leading grassroots efforts to stem the tide of death and despair. She also addresses the effects of proposed policies, surveying what remains systematically broken and highlighting new approaches from across the nation that show promise.

Based out of Roanoke, Virginia, Macy is a New York Times bestselling author and has won dozens of national journalism awards over the past 30 years, including a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism.

Following the lecture, a meet-and-greet reception with Macy takes place.

Additionally, Barnes and Noble will be on hand beginning at 5:30 p.m. to sell copies of Macy’s books to those interested in purchasing them for Macy to sign.

The event is free and open to the public. It will also be available via livestream at www.etsu.edu/cph/livestream.php.
