GRAY — If you are a fan of mystery/suspense and historical fiction, local author Jo Allison (pseudonym for Linda Dobkins) shares your passion.

A resident of Bristol, Virginia, she speaks at the Gray Library at 6 p.m., Oct. 16. She will talk about her writing, answer questions, and sell and sign her books.

The protagonist in Allison's series of five books is Julia Nye, a typist for the St. Louis City Police Dept. in 1910. She engages in the detective work she experienced with her sheriff father.

The novels highlight a young "new woman's" fight for justice. These included suffrage, working outside the home, and challenging the restrictions that society placed on women during that period. Other subjects such as prohibition, race relations and labor unrest are also woven into the plots.

Her background as a news reporter, advertising copywriter, teacher and published academic, has helped her hone the skills that she uses for her research and award-winning writing.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Call the library at 423-477-1550 for more information.
