JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s department of theater and dance has announced the four shows that will headline its 2018-19 season at the Bud Frank Theatre.

ETSU opens the season with Jack and the Beanstalk, the timeless classic of a boy named Jack, his mother, a cow named Milky White, some magic beans and a giant at the top of a beanstalk. Written by Chris Stiles and directed and choreographed by faculty member Cara Harker, the show runs through Oct. 11 and features aerial dance.

Everyone’s favorite detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal sidekick Dr. Watson unravel their most notorious case in Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery. The show runs Nov. 15-18 under the direction of Bobby Funk. In addition to the two actors portraying Holmes and Watson, three other actors perform nearly 40 characters in this fast-paced comedy. Can Holmes and Watson crack the mystery of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” before a family curse dooms its newest heir?

Will Eno’s Middletown appears on the ETSU stage Feb. 21-24 and is directed by Melissa Shafer. This funny and deeply moving play takes place in a small American town where a friendship develops between a longtime resident and a newcomer. The lives of Middletown residents intersect in peculiar and emotional ways during a journey that takes them from the local library to outer space and points between.

Sense and Sensibility, directed by Herb Parker and adapted by Kate Hamill, closes the 2018-19 season, running April 11-14. Based on the novel by Jane Austen, the story follows the Dashwood sisters and their recently widowed mother as they embark on a new journey in life where they experience love, romance and heartbreak.

The design team for the season includes Beth Skinner and Karen Brewster, costume designers; Jonathon Taylor, scenic designer; Zach Olsen, technical designer; and Shafer as lighting designer.

In addition to evening performances, school performances are scheduled for Jack and the Beanstalk, Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery and Sense and Sensibility. For more information about the season, visit www.etsu.edu/theatre.
