ABINGDON, VA — Registration deadline for two art classes is Jan. 28 at William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia.

Stillness: A Winter’s Journey in Painting is led by Laura Blankenship and begins Feb. 2. The class is held for four weeks from 2-4:30 p.m. and is for teens and adults.

It is winter. The leaves are still, the snow falls. Everything slows down under the cold. Inside the warmth of the studio, you'll explore the concept of stillness. Students also come to understand it by engaging with its opposite: movement. On this four-week exploratory journey, you'll travel together. The inquiry is how do different physical, mental and emotional states affect our work? What do stillness and movement really embody? You'll spend ample time playing in paint, with pastels, and other 2-D media, and we record the process that birthed each work of art. Process is emphasized rather than final product. The intention for this workshop is to open you up to feeling, emotion, and physical states, and to allow whatever arises to express itself in your work. This is the class for you if you’re interested in allowing a sense of play, exploration, experimentation, and intuition lead your art-making.

The cost is $215 ($190 for members). Payment plan option is available, call for details.

Register at (276) 628-5005 ext. 109 by Jan. 28. Registration is not confirmed until payment is received.

Repeatable Patterns is taught by Laken Bridges Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 1-4 p.m. for teens and adults.

Learn how to create a repeatable pattern from one image and explore the process of linoleum block relief printmaking. This process is akin to stamp-making (on a larger scale), allowing you to create a repeatable image to apply to paper, fabric and other surfaces. Create an image and carve it into a block to print your own textiles, wrapping paper or unique artwork. Supplies included. Bring a few drawings or photos for inspiration, a work shirt or apron, and disposable gloves if you have sensitive skin.

The class is $40 non-members, $30 members. Supplies included.

Register at (276) 628-5005 ext. 109 by Jan. 28, so supplies can be acquired. Registration is not confirmed until payment is received.
