JOHNSON CITY — The Student Advisory Council of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Music hosts its second annual Charity Concert Saturday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. in the Brown Hall auditorium.

Proceeds from this variety show benefit the Dawn of Hope.

The program features many faculty and students in solo and ensemble performances. Included are a number of the department’s regular ensembles, such as ETSU Chorale, East Tennessee Belles, Percussion Ensemble, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble and Jazz Collective. Student-led ensembles on the program include The Swashbucklers, Harmonium, McKenzie and The Buc 5, a barber shop-style group.

Among the faculty participating in the program are Dr. Benjamin Caton and Jerilyn Paolini, who perform a duet, and solo pianist Yi-Yang Chen.

“One of university’s missions is to positively contribute to our community. In brainstorming ways the Music Department could do more, we decided to host a charity concert with all of the proceeds going directly to a local charity,” said Dr. Matthew Potterton, chair and director of choral and vocal activities in the department. “I put a group of faculty together to research local groups, and there are many incredible groups in our community doing great work. But there was something about Dawn of Hope that spoke to the majority of our faculty, and we decided to make this our mission this year. We hope to do this every year as a positive outreach to our community.”

Potterton then turned to the Student Advisory Council, and its members enthusiastically “came on board” and planned the concert.

“The evening will be casual and will highlight our department with audience-friendly music,” Potterton said. “The concert is free, and we only ask that folks give what they can for Dawn of Hope.”
