BIG STONE GAP, VA.- The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park announces a new “Pencil Me In” rotating exhibit at the C. Bascom Slemp Memorial Library in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. This rotating exhibit runs through Tuesday, April 30.

This exhibit features a collection of mechanical pencils belonging to Boyd Burdette. Burdette was raised in East Stone Gap and graduated from the East Tennessee State Teachers college. After graduation he was employed as a teacher and as a school administrator before serving in WWII. Before and after his service in WWII, Burdette was hired as a salesman by Procter and Gamble. His sales area consisted of all Southwest Virginia, he collected mechanical pencils from the businesses on his route. Burdette passed away in May 1954, and his collection was donated to the museum in 2016 by his daughter.

Admission is free. The exhibit may be viewed during library opening hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.; Tuesday 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Saturday 1-5 p.m. and Sunday 2-5 p.m.
