BIG STONE GAP, VA. — The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park announces a new rotating exhibit “Diamond In the Rough” on the campus of UVA Wise. The exhibit is open through Thursday, July 26 at UVA Wise before moving to the Slemp Gallery at Mountain Empire Community College in August.

The park is partnering with the University of Virginia’s College at Wise to place this “Diamonds in the Rough” rotating exhibit in their campus library. This exhibit was created in partnership with student Skyler Kuehnel as part of a class project. Kuehnel is a student at the University of Virginia's College at Wise, and is studying as a history major with an interest in public history and a philosophy minor.

His exhibit features artifacts and photographs from the Stonega Coal Camp and highlights the important aspects of life in a camp in the early 20th century, focusing on work, home life and recreation. Harsh working conditions, long hours and marginal pay made for a hard existence for coal miners in the 1920s, but the amenities supplied by the coal companies, including housing and a cooperative community life, provided many happy experiences as well

For additional information about this exhibit, call the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park at 276-523-1322 or the UVA Wise library at 276-376-7128.
