JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development invites children and youth to participate in the 2019 Renaissance Child Camps this summer.

The camps offer a variety of educational, hands-on, interactive opportunities for participants from first grade through high school. Programming is based on the STREAM (science, technology, reading/recreation, engineering, arts and math) educational curriculum and follows Tennessee Core State Standards. An emphasis on the well-rounded child is completed by outside play, creative activities, swimming and field trips.

The one-week camps are under way and continue through Aug. 2, with one week off from July 1-5. All camps meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A Media and Communications Camp (June 10-14) for teens interested in writing and journalism helps campers learn the “who, what, when and where” of writing. They will also experience photography, audio and video, with hands-on use of the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment of the ETSU Department of Media and Communication.

During this camp, participants will film a “commercial” to be used as promotion for future media camps. A one-day focus will immerse campers in the world of ETSU Buccaneer athletics, where they will learn what goes on behind the scenes in coverage of sporting events. The final day of camp will culminate in a “red carpet” showcase event in which campers’ work from the week will be shown to family and friends.

Returning camps include the “Teen Competitive Robotics Camp,” “Teen Cooking and Baking,” “Teen Graphic Arts” and “Teen Computer/Digital Media” camps. Additional camps include “Earth Camp,” “Imagination Station,” “Construction Zone,” “POP: Preserve Our Planet” and “DaVinci’s Invention Week” for first through sixth graders.

Fees range from $185 for each camp, with discounts available for the children of ETSU employees and students and for multiple registrations.
